  • SSP Senior Tour the Sibley Site

    Tour the Sibley Site Visit the oldest Euro-American settlement in Minnesota where three distinctive limestone buildings grace the Minnesota River bluff across from Fort Snelling. These buildings mark the American Fur Company’s control over the region’s Dakota trade between 1825 and 1853, when Mendota was a major center of the region’s fur trade. The tour will briefly explore a variety of topics that range from Native American history, to the fur trade and Minnesota’s pioneering life through the houses and people that lived on the site. Parking can be anywhere along the street in front of the house, or on the side (D Street). We will start on the grounds with everyone for the beginning at Dupuis, then drive down to the bottom of the hill and connect with the group there for the remaining buildings / tour.     Arrive at the New Ulm Visitors Center to use the facilities. There is self-serve coffee and treats at the center. A local guide will step on the motor coach for a riding tour. Get an introductory view of this unique village. New Ulm is truly the Bavarian capital of the Midwest. The tour will include the history and points of interest: View the architecture downtown, see Herman Monument, drive past Governor John Lind’s Home and author, Wanda Gag’s Home. Drive past historic churches, museums, and memorials. The tour will conclude at the Glockenspiel Musical Clock Tower for the noon performance. It is one of the world’s few free-standing carillon clock towers. It stands 45 feet high, and its largest Bourdon (bell) weighs 595 pounds while the total weight of the bells is two tons. The bells chime the time of day in Westminster style. . Arrive at Kaiserhoff Restaurant for lunch. Menu: Choose at sign up. 1.) Landjaeger Old German Style Pork and Beef Smoked Sausage, Served with Hot German Potato Salad, Sauerkraut, served with Fresh Rye Bread, Beverage. 2.)   • Spirit Of Hastings SSP

    Hear the history of the Le Duc Family and some tales about manifestations of spiritual visitors. This splendid mansion was built by William Gates LeDuc during the Civil War. The 15-room house stands as a rare monument of unaltered Gothic Revival architecture. It features a picturesque tower, a limestone exterior and 20-inch-thick walls, a prominent front porch, chimneys for 10 fireplaces and a third-floor chapel with a white pine interior. Distinguished visitors included President Rutherford B. Hayes and Minnesota’s first governor, Henry Hastings Sibley. Tour both the first and second floor - there is not an elevator. Those who want to go outside can visit the Carriage Barn and Simmons Shed with exhibits on display. Luncheon Menu: Chicken Salad on a Croissant, a Fruit Salad, Vegetable, Dessert, Water, Tea, or Coffee. Tour St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. In the mid-1800’s all the social climbers, including the LeDuc family, recognized the importance of being a well-respected member of the local church. It is the fifth oldest church in the diocese and was organized as a mission in 1850 and was the only church in town that permitted Native and African Americans to their worship services. Church pews, built of butternut wood, were installed in 1867, and are still used today. Two small matching pews are found in the chapel of the LeDuc Mansion. Two of General William LeDuc's daughters taught Sunday school at St. Luke's Episcopal, and the family is referenced many times in the church's historical records. Alexis Bailly Vineyard: It is Minnesota's Original Winery. In 1973, the family planted the first vineyard in Minnesota with a pioneering spirit that has brought them unlikely fame in the wine drinking world. Their tasting room opened in 1978 with the celebratory release of the first wines ever produced commercially of 100% Minnesota grown grapes. Today, the second generation continues the proud heritage of making wines in the world's most difficult climate – "Where the grapes can suffer."
